Updated: Atiku Sympathizes with Zulum, Flood Victims

….Donated N100 million

THE former Vice -President and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the last 2023 general elections, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has on Sunday arrived Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, where he sympathized with Government and people of the state over the unfortunate flood disaster that has so far displaced two million people with several others killed and property worth billions of naira submerged.

The Wazirin Adamawa who called for thorough investigation on the root cause of the incident with a view to avoid future occurrence also donated N100 million to cushion the current hardship faced by victims who are taking refuge at various camps in the state.

While at the Government House, Maiduguri, Atiku extend his heartfelt condolences to Governor Babagana Zulum, government and the good people of the state, especially those who have lost their beloved ones.

He said, the incident was a monumental, coming at a time when the state is gaining relative peace following over decade Boko Haram crisis.

He then prayed for the repose of the souls of those who were killed, and wished the injured ones quick recovery.

“I am here with my entourage to commiserate with you, Government and the good people of Borno state over the unfortunate flood disaster which I learnt has killed over a thousand people.

” Borno is our state, and whatever happened to Borno, whether directly or indirectly, it affect me as well.

“The incident is very monumental, and I want to assure you that we are behind you in this trying period.

” I want to call on the federal government and other stakeholders to intensify more efforts and support Borno Government.

” I am here to also give my little support to the tune of N100 million in managing the plights of the displaced persons. I also pray God to grant Aljannatul Firdaus to those who were killed in the incident, and their families to bear the irreparable loss’. He said.

Responding, Governor Zulum on behalf of government and people of the state expressed appreciation to the former Vice-President, for not only donating N100 million, but for securing his time to personally visit the state and offer condolences.

Earlier Alhaji Abubakar and his entourage met with the Shehu of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin Elkanemi and sympathized with the Monarch at his palace which was completely submerged by the flood.

The Royal Father thanked the Wazirin Adamawa for the sympathy visit, even as he decried that Borno which has suffered much in Boko Haram crisis, woke up again with another flood disaster that ravaged almost 70% of the entire Maiduguri Metropolis.

Similarly, a delegation from the Kano State Government, led by Amina Aliyu, Commissioner of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, visited Governor Babagana Umara Zulum over the incident.

The delegation announced a donation of N100 million to support the victims.

Commissioner of Information, Halilu, described the situation as “disturbing” and prayed for the repose of those who lost their lives.

Governor Zulum also appreciated the support coming from Kano State Government.

“We are grateful for the solidarity and support. We will work together to address the crisis and provide relief to the affected communities.” Zulum stated.

Our Correspondent observed that since last Tuesday when the incident occured, there are still some people that are trapped with no access to basic food, shelter and clean water, even as many decomposed bodies of human beings and animals float in the water, as rescue mission continue with many missing.
