JUST days after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, Meg Whitman, the US Ambassador to Kenya, has submitted her resignation to President Joe Biden. In a statement on Wednesday, Whitman announced her departure, reflecting on her time in Nairobi and her dedication to strengthening the US-Kenya partnership.

‘Today, I informed my team at the US Embassy that I have tendered my resignation. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the American people by deepening our relationship with Kenya,’ Whitman said.

Appointed in 2022, Whitman fostered a notably close relationship with Kenyan President William Ruto, culminating in Ruto’s landmark state visit to Washington in May—the first visit by an African leader to the US in 16 years. Whitman also cited key achievements during her tenure, particularly her focus on trade, security, and healthcare collaboration.

‘My work helped open doors for American companies in Kenya. Trade, job creation, and US investments are at historic highs thanks to our efforts,’ she noted, pointing to increased bilateral investments and economic growth between the two nations.

During her time as ambassador, Kenya gained elevated status as the first major non-NATO ally for the US in sub-Saharan Africa, a milestone she highlighted as a sign of deepening ties. She added, ‘As with all US ambassadors, I serve at the President’s request. The American people have spoken, and a new President will be inaugurated in January.’

Whitman expressed optimism about the future of US-Kenya relations, asserting, ‘I am confident that our 60 years of partnership will continue to grow and benefit both Americans and Kenyans.’

Following her departure, Charge d’Affaires Marc Dillard will temporarily lead the US Embassy in Nairobi as it awaits new leadership under the incoming administration.
