The United States has given the green light for a $346 million arms deal that will see Nigeria receive a fresh supply of ammunition, precision bombs, and rockets — a major step aimed at boosting the country’s fight against terrorism and curbing illicit trafficking.
The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the approval on Wednesday, outlining the massive package: over a thousand MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs, precision-guided Paveway II bomb components, programmable fuzes, and thousands of Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II rounds. It also includes essential bomb parts, practice rockets, testing equipment, and full logistics support.
Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems have been tapped as contractors for the deal. According to the DSCA, this military boost will help Nigeria better tackle terror groups and stem illegal trafficking, especially in the Gulf of Guinea — all without disrupting the region’s military balance.
This isn’t the first time the US has stepped in with heavy military support. Back in 2022, Washington approved a $997 million deal that included 12 attack helicopters and night vision systems, strengthening Nigeria’s defence capacity. The final bill for this new package will depend on Nigeria’s exact requirements, budget approvals, and signed agreements.
