US tariffs: Trump’s biggest defeat

It is Donald Trump’s biggest defeat since his triumphant return to the White House just over a year ago. The judges of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court of the USAhave ruled that the US president exceeded his constitutional authority by imposing a large portion of global tariffs on American imports.

The president’s impact on the decision was clearly evident in his speech to the press in the White House shortly after the verdict was announced. It was a “crazy verdict,” he said, a “disgrace.” The judges had bowed to “foreign influences,” explained a visibly angry Trump – without, however, providing any evidence of this. He describes the plaintiffs, i.e. the companies that sued against the tariffs, as “dirtbags”. And he repeatedly listed the achievements that his tariffs supposedly brought. Not only did they bring the American economy to new heights, they also prevented wars and successfully combated drug smuggling.
