Verdict on Trump tariffs: “Trump is weakened”


Julian Hinz heads the trade policy research group at the Institute for the World Economy in Kiel and is considered one of the leading trade economists in Germany.

THE TIME: Mr. Hinz, the Supreme Court of the United States has the most tariffs of Donald Trump declared unlawful. What does that mean?

Julian Hinz: A new phase of uncertainty is now beginning. The ruling initially only refers to the tariffs that Trump imposed with reference to the so-called International Emergency Economic Powers Act, an emergency law from 1977.
