Prominent APC chieftain, Joe Igbokwe, has joined the rising chorus of Nigerians expressing frustration over the skyrocketing electricity tariff for Band A consumers.
Recall that back in April 2024, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved a sharp 300% hike in electricity rates for Band A users — raising the tariff from ₦68 to a staggering ₦225 per kilowatt-hour. The hike, which officially kicked off on April 1, was meant to reflect the cost of improved service, but many urban consumers say it’s become unsustainable.
Taking to his Facebook page, Igbokwe revealed that even he — along with many in the Band A category — can no longer comfortably use essential appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators due to the cost burden.
“I do not think Distribution Companies are making the money they expected because we are switching off ACs, fridges, lights. Take all to Band B, make more money,” he wrote, urging President Tinubu to revisit the controversial policy.
Consumers have been calling for a downward review or reversal, especially as the reality of limited power supply and inflation continues to strain household and business budgets.
