“We’ve Taken Back PDP” — Nyesom Wike Declares Party Rebirth, Blasts Defectors

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been “taken back” by loyal members, marking what he described as a major turning point for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at the PDP’s 10th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Wike struck a confident tone, insisting the gathering signaled a fresh beginning after months of internal crisis. According to him, the convention—monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)—proved that the party had regained its footing.

“Today marks the rebirth of our party in a new form… a united party, ready to move forward,” Wike said.

He did not hold back in criticising those who left the party, accusing them of lacking leadership and courage. In his words, true leaders stay and fix problems rather than walk away when challenges arise.

Taking a swipe at opposition figures, Wike also referenced Peter Obi, arguing that leadership is tested during crises, not in moments of comfort. He likened defecting governors and opposition figures to individuals who failed to stand firm when their parties needed direction.

Despite the criticism, Wike extended an olive branch to aggrieved members, urging them to return—but on the condition of unity and discipline. “No one will be excluded,” he said, adding that the goal is to rebuild a stronger and more cohesive party.

Earlier, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, reinforced the message of unity, warning that personal ambition must not override the party’s collective interest. “No ambition is greater than this party,” he stated.

Adding to the urgency, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu cautioned that failure to reconcile internal divisions could threaten the party’s survival. Similarly, Sule Lamido appealed to defectors to return, reminding members of the PDP’s historic role in shaping Nigeria’s democracy.

With tensions still simmering beneath the surface, the convention may signal a new phase—but whether unity truly holds will likely define the party’s strength heading into 2027.
