Why I Opposed Atiku in 2023 – Wike Speaks on PDP Crisis, Rivers Politics

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has once again explained why he opposed Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition during the 2023 elections. Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on Monday, Wike maintained that his stand was based on principles of equity, fairness, and justice.

“I made it very clear that I was not going to support Atiku Abubakar,” Wike said. “For equity, fairness, and justice, it was the turn of the South.”

Wike reaffirmed his long-standing stance on power rotation within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and suggested that pushing another northern candidate after President Buhari would have been unjust to the South.

The former Rivers governor also revealed that internal PDP struggles were deeper than many assumed. He said there was a strong push to install former Senate President David Mark as the party’s National Chairman, but he and others resisted the move.

“We refused because he was not going to bring any change to the party,” he said bluntly.

On the ongoing political tension in Rivers State, Wike stated that contrary to speculations, President Bola Tinubu has no plans to extend an emergency rule in the state.

“From my understanding, the President does not want to extend the emergency rule in Rivers State,” he said, signaling optimism for a peaceful resolution in his home state.
