Why I Will Not Remarry After Buhari’s De@th — Ex-First Lady, Aisha Opens Up

Former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, has said she has no plans to remarry, describing the decision as a personal and practical choice rather than a moral or cultural statement.

Her position was revealed by Dr Charles Omole, author of the newly unveiled biography From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, presented at the State House, Abuja, on Monday. According to the book, Aisha Buhari made it clear—almost casually—that remarriage is not part of her future, noting that she now has grandchildren and that one marriage was enough for her.

The biography explains that her stance is not rooted in moral judgement but in pragmatism, deliberately avoiding cultural narratives that often portray widows as either disloyal for remarrying or saintly for remaining single. Instead, it presents her choice as that of a woman defining her own path forward.

Looking ahead, the former First Lady plans to lead a quieter but purposeful life, balancing family, philanthropy and travel. She intends to spend quality time with her grandchildren, ensuring they know her as an active presence in their lives rather than a distant public figure.

She will also continue running the Aisha Buhari Foundation and overseeing a cardiovascular and medical centre in Kano, which has reportedly carried out over 200 medical procedures. The book adds that she plans to remain socially engaged through hosting, collaboration and charitable work, albeit outside the intense glare of politics.

Omole describes her decision as a form of personal renewal after years in public life, noting that while her marriage gave her a platform to speak, it also came with political isolation and criticism. He characterises her post-First Lady life as a conscious step away from political visibility in favour of healing and stability.

Aisha Buhari married Muhammadu Buhari on December 2, 1989, following his divorce in 1988. She became First Lady in 2015 when Buhari was elected president. The couple were married for 35 years and had five children.
