Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, chose Enugu State for his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to enable the South-East “make a statement” ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to the leader of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko.
Speaking with Vanguard, Tanko disclosed that leaders and members of the Obidient Movement had already converged in Enugu, the South-East zonal capital, ahead of the event. He explained that Obi had been aligned with the ADC coalition for some time, noting that the Enugu gathering was meant to chart a new direction for his supporters nationwide.
Explaining the choice of Enugu over Awka, Anambra State, Tanko said the city’s historical significance informed the decision. “Enugu is the historical capital of the East. It adds historical solidity when the East wants to make a statement,” he said.
Tanko added that the programme, scheduled to hold at Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, would allow Obi to address his supporters on the road ahead towards the 2027 elections. He noted that members of the Obidient Movement were present in large numbers to show solidarity.
A national leader of the ADC confirmed that the party’s leadership would be present to welcome Obi. “We are excited. The National Chairman of the ADC and other leaders are likely to be there,” he said.
Earlier in the week, Obi had declared his readiness to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying he was better prepared to lead Nigeria. His defection follows months of speculation over his next political move.
While many within the Obidient Movement see the move as strategic, dissenting voices remain. Dr. Katch Onanuju, a self-described pioneer leader of the movement, expressed concern that Obi’s decision could hurt his political future, arguing that entrenched interests within the ADC might work against him.
Despite the mixed reactions, ADC leaders insist the party remains open and committed to a transparent candidate selection process, as Obi begins a new chapter in his political journey.
