Burkina Faso Drops ECOWAS Logo on New Biometric Passports

BURKINA Faso has introduced new biometric passports that no longer bear the logo of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), further signalling the country’s withdrawal from the regional bloc. This move comes after military juntas seized control in Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, and the three nations jointly announced in January their intention to exit ECOWAS.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana confirmed the significant change at the recent passport launch, stating, ‘On this passport, there is no ECOWAS logo, and no mention of ECOWAS either. Since January, Burkina Faso has decided to withdraw from this body, and this is just a realisation of the action already taken by Burkina Faso.’

The decision to exclude the ECOWAS branding on Burkina Faso’s passports underscores the country’s determination to distance itself from the 15-member political and economic union. ECOWAS, established to promote regional cooperation, free movement, and a common market for over 400 million people, has expressed concerns over the potential consequences of the withdrawal.

ECOWAS has been vocal in its opposition to the departure of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali from the bloc, warning that such actions would disrupt the benefits of free movement and economic collaboration within the region. However, Burkina Faso’s recent actions signal a deeper commitment to sever ties and establish greater independence from ECOWAS as the country navigates its new political landscape.
