THE expansion of off-grid solar energy systems in underserved and unserved communities across sub-Saharan Africa is set to accelerate following a new partnership between Ignite Power and Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE). Ignite Power, a leading distributed renewable energy provider in the region, has teamed up with SEFE, an international energy company, to execute a carbon off-take transaction aimed at carbon markets.
This agreement marks a major milestone in Ignite Power’s ambitious mission to provide clean, sustainable energy to 100 million people by 2030. It represents a significant advancement in climate finance and energy access, facilitating Ignite Power’s further growth across both West and East Africa.
Yariv Cohen, CEO of Ignite Power, praised the collaboration’s potential, noting that Africa presents a unique opportunity to build a future-ready utility infrastructure that is entirely clean and renewable.
‘Africa has the chance to develop the next generation of energy infrastructure that is 100 percent clean, renewable, and sustainable,’ said Cohen. ‘If we fail to establish this, the alternative would be costly and highly polluting projects. Off-grid solar solutions, on the other hand, have proven to be the most effective, affordable, and scalable approach to providing electricity for large-scale electrification efforts.’
The $24 million off-take agreement, enabled through the partnership with SEFE, is viewed as a crucial step toward connecting 100 million people in sub-Saharan Africa to sustainable energy. SEFE’s Chief Commercial Officer, Frederic Barnaud, reaffirmed their commitment to supporting high-quality and ethical projects like this collaboration with Ignite Power.
‘The off-grid solar sector in Africa has seen exponential growth in recent years, driven by the urgent need to provide sustainable and affordable electricity to the 600 million people on the continent who still lack access to power,’ Barnaud said.
With the global off-grid solar market expected to surpass $25bn by 2030, the partnership between Ignite Power and SEFE is poised to make a substantial impact. Ignite Power has already provided solar energy to over 3 million people across nine African countries, and this new deal will help accelerate its efforts to bring clean energy to millions more.
