FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron has reiterated France’s commitment to boosting Africa’s presence in key international institutions, including the United Nations and the World Bank. Macron made these remarks during a landmark visit to Paris by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, marking the first such trip by a Nigerian leader in over two decades.
In a joint press briefing, Macron commended Nigeria’s growing influence on global matters, stating, ‘Your commitment to global governance is essential—whether addressing climate change, humanitarian challenges, or safeguarding the oceans.’
Macron emphasised France’s support for Nigeria’s integration into global platforms, adding, ‘We are committed to advancing the inclusion of African nations, particularly prominent ones like Nigeria, in organisations such as the UN Security Council and financial bodies like the IMF and World Bank.’
Collaboration on regional security and economy
Acknowledging Nigeria’s pivotal role in West Africa, Macron praised Tinubu’s efforts as chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He highlighted Nigeria’s ambitions to lead in regional security and defence, stating that France intends to collaborate closely on these priorities.
President Tinubu expressed optimism, affirming Nigeria’s readiness to engage economically and diplomatically with France. ‘Nigeria is open for business,’ Tinubu said, promoting the country’s commitment to fostering a free-market economy and strengthening bilateral ties.
This dialogue underscores France’s broader aim of fostering equitable representation for Africa in global decision-making, while bolstering its partnership with one of Africa’s largest economies.
