Ghana Speaker Suspends 4 MPs Over Chaotic Incident

GHANA’S Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has suspended four Members of Parliament (MPs) for two weeks following a disruptive altercation during a ministerial vetting session. The suspension, effective immediately, aims to uphold order and discipline in the legislative chamber.

Suspended MPs and their roles

The suspended lawmakers include: Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and  Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

This move follows an unruly scene that erupted Thursday night during the Appointments Committee’s proceedings, resulting in damage to furniture and microphones, with tensions nearly escalating into physical confrontations.

Speaker orders strict measures

To enforce the suspension, Speaker Bagbin has instructed the Parliamentary Marshal to prevent the affected MPs from accessing the chamber for the duration of their suspension.

Additionally, he has established a special committee to investigate the events leading to the disorder. The committee’s findings are expected to guide further disciplinary measures if necessary.

Speaker condemns ’embarrassing’ conduct

Addressing Parliament, Speaker Bagbin described the incident as an embarrassment that tarnished the image of the institution. He stressed that such misconduct would not be tolerated, warning that any recurrence could result in harsher consequences.

‘The actions of these MPs have undermined the dignity of this house. Such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be allowed to continue,’ he stated.

He further explained that the suspension serves as a warning to all MPs, reinforcing the importance of maintaining order and respecting parliamentary procedures.

Parliamentary apology and next steps

Following the chaotic events, the Appointments Committee issued an apology before resuming the vetting process. The Speaker reassured the public that Parliament remains committed to maintaining decorum and will take a firm stance against any disruptions that compromise its work.

With investigations underway, further actions may be taken based on the committee’s recommendations, ensuring accountability and preventing future incidents.
