GHANA’S President John Dramani Mahama’s official X (formerly Twitter) account has been fully restored after it was compromised by hackers, according to the state-owned Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
The breach was first confirmed by the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who assured the public that immediate steps were being taken to regain control of the account. In his earlier statement, Ofosu noted that Mahama’s communications team was collaborating closely with X’s technical support to resolve the issue swiftly.
Swift action restores control
According to GBC’s report, Mahama’s team acted quickly to mitigate any potential damage from the unauthorised access. Their joint efforts with X’s support team led to the successful recovery and restoration of the account.
A statement confirming the development was posted directly from Mahama’s verified X account.
‘My team has restored my account, working with the X support team. Thank you for your enquiries and offers to assist,’ the post read.
Ongoing security measures
Following the restoration, Mahama’s communications team, along with relevant authorities, have put additional security protocols in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. According to GBC, these measures are aimed at bolstering account security and ensuring the integrity of Mahama’s online presence.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu also stated that government cybersecurity teams remain vigilant in monitoring high-profile accounts to guard against further breaches. He reiterated the importance of robust digital security in the face of rising cyber threats.
Public reactions and support
The news of the account’s recovery has been welcomed by supporters and the general public. Many expressed relief that the situation was handled swiftly and that Mahama’s voice on social media has been safeguarded.
GBC noted that several public figures had offered assistance and support during the recovery process, reflecting broad concern over the incident.
The swift restoration of President John Mahama’s X account underscores the growing need for proactive cybersecurity measures, particularly for public figures. As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, collaboration between users, tech companies, and government agencies remains critical in safeguarding digital platforms.
GBC reports that authorities will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the account remains secure.
