SOUTH African football has been rocked by the sudden death of Sinamandla Zondi, a promising 22-year-old defender for Durban City, who collapsed during the warm-up ahead of a second-tier league match on Tuesday.

Zondi was preparing to face Milford FC when he fell ill. He was rushed to hospital, but word of his death reached match officials by halftime. The game was immediately abandoned, Durban City confirmed in a statement, according to Reuters.

‘He was more than a footballer’

Affectionately nicknamed Sgora, Zondi had been a key figure for Durban City this season as the club leads the Motsepe Foundation Championship and pushes for promotion to South Africa’s Premier Division.

‘It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi, aka Sgora, a loved member of the Durban City family,’ the club said. ‘Sinamandla was more than a talented footballer. He was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son, and an inspiration to all who knew him.’

The club extended its condolences to his family, friends, and teammates, adding that it would continue offering support in the wake of the tragedy.

Zondi made his professional debut in September 2021 and had since grown into a consistent presence in the team’s defence. His passing has left fans and fellow players in shock, with tributes pouring in from across the football community.
