Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed rare optimism over the unfolding political alliance under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a sign of a truly united Nigeria.
Taking to social media platform X on Thursday, Bashir shared what he called a deeply personal sentiment about the significance of the new opposition coalition. “I’m sensing a united Nigeria under the flag of the ADC. For the first time in my life as a Nigerian,” he posted.
His comment comes just a day after the formal adoption of the ADC as the official political platform for a new opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections—an effort designed to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the very party under which his father once governed Kaduna State.
The coalition is made up of major political figures from across the country and divides. Those present at the unveiling on Wednesday included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, ex-Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Bashir’s comment stands out—not only because of his political heritage, but also for its tone of cautious hope. In a country often fragmented by politics, ethnicity, and religion, his message resonated with many young Nigerians seeking a more united and inclusive political future.
The ADC-led coalition’s emergence marks a new chapter in Nigeria’s political narrative, one that could potentially rewrite traditional alliances and create new space for national convergence ahead of 2027.
