Six Arrested For Illegal Waste Dumping in Agege, Lagos (Photo)

In a renewed effort to keep Lagos clean and safe, the state government on Wednesday evening arrested six individuals for illegally dumping refuse on a road median along Old Abeokuta Expressway, directly opposite the Total filling station in Agege.

The arrest was made by a joint task force comprising officials from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) unit and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources. The suspects were caught red-handed in the act of indiscriminate waste disposal, a common but dangerous practice that continues to plague parts of the city.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrests in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account. He reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, saying the culprits would face prosecution according to Lagos’ environmental laws.

The arrested individuals were identified as Khalifa Mohammed, Sanusi Bello, Monsuru Salisu, Uzor Michael, Michael Obi, and Ajoke Shobande.

“Lagos is our collective responsibility,” Wahab said. “We will not fold our arms while some individuals continue to degrade the environment and endanger public health through reckless behavior.”

The commissioner stressed that the state will continue to enforce its environmental laws to promote cleaner and more livable communities. He urged residents to dispose of waste responsibly and warned that more arrests would follow for those who violate sanitation rules.

This latest operation adds to a growing list of clampdowns as the state intensifies efforts to combat illegal dumping, especially in densely populated areas like Agege, where sanitation remains a major concern.
