Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has cast doubt on any real coalition forming against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections — and he’s particularly skeptical about Peter Obi’s chances of securing the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket.
Speaking on Arise News, Omokri didn’t mince words when he described the buzz around a possible coalition between political heavyweights like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Rotimi Amaechi as nothing more than a “losers’ convention.”
“These are politicians who lost in 2023, coming together again and expecting a different outcome,” he said. “Why should anyone, least of all the president, be worried about that?”
Omokri argued that while the idea of uniting opposition voices under one umbrella sounds strategic — especially given that Obi and Atiku together polled more votes than Tinubu in 2023 — the reality is far messier. According to him, there’s no real unity, just clashing ambitions and oversized egos.
“If Peter Obi says he’s running, Atiku says he’s running, and Amaechi is submitting proposals for a one-term presidency under the ADC — then what coalition are we really talking about?” he asked. “This is not strategy. This is chaos in disguise.”
Omokri also doubted Obi’s ability to clinch the ADC ticket. Despite speculation, he believes the party is more likely to back a northern candidate in 2027. “Peter Obi doesn’t have that much influence within the ADC. I know who’s likely going to get the ticket — and it’s not him,” he said.
The former presidential aide wrapped up his thoughts by saying what many political watchers are thinking: without unity and a shared vision, any so-called coalition risks collapsing before it even begins. “It’s not a movement. It’s just a parade of political egos moving in different directions,” he concluded.
