CODWA Condemns Sowore’s Detention, Accuses Police of Political Witch-Hunt

The Community Outreach for Development and Welfare Advocacy (CODWA) has come down hard on the Nigerian Police for the latest arrest of pro-democracy activist and standarddailypress publisher, Omoyele Sowore. Describing the act as a “politically motivated crackdown,” the group says it is nothing but an attempt to muzzle dissenting voices.

In a statement signed by CODWA’s Executive Director, Comrade Taiwo Otitolaye, on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the organisation accused the police of dancing to the tune of powerful individuals threatened by Sowore’s relentless advocacy for transparency, justice, and good governance.

CODWA didn’t mince words, questioning the neutrality of the Nigerian Police and alleging it has become a tool for shielding corrupt elites while going after those who demand accountability. “It is alarming that the police seem more interested in shielding looters of our commonwealth than upholding the law,” the group noted.

The group stressed that Sowore’s repeated arrests over the years—often without solid legal grounds—paint a worrying picture of a justice system being selectively applied. They called this a dangerous pattern of abuse of power and an erosion of democratic freedoms.

CODWA is demanding Sowore’s immediate and unconditional release, warning that continued harassment of activists only deepens public mistrust in institutions meant to serve the people. The group also reiterated its unwavering support for all Nigerians standing up to injustice and fighting for a fairer society.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and consistent critic of government excesses, has faced multiple detentions over his activism. This latest episode, CODWA insists, is a clear sign that civic space in Nigeria is under siege.
