Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put the brakes on his planned registration with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), fueling speculation that the party might instead be eyeing former President Goodluck Jonathan for its 2027 presidential ticket.
Atiku, who recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party after years of internal wrangling, was set to make his defection official with a membership card presentation in his hometown of Jada, Adamawa State.
The event, originally scheduled for Wednesday, August 6, was quietly shelved with no public explanation from Atiku’s camp.
Insiders told Sunday PUNCH that the ADC has been holding behind-the-scenes talks with Jonathan, exploring the possibility of him returning to the political stage for another shot at the presidency.
Confirming the postponement, ADC Adamawa State Chairman, Shehu Yohana, said Atiku told him over the phone that the ceremony had been shifted to mid-August, though no specific date was given.
“From the way things are going, because of one issue or the other, the event could even be pushed to September,” Yohana revealed. “He also mentioned he was waiting for some APC governors planning to join ADC to make their move before his own defection in Jada.”
