A stark contrast exists between the rundown state of infrastructure in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital, and Governor Seyi Makinde’s frequent foreign trips, sparking questions about his leadership priorities.
The Ibadan City Marathon was held at a stadium that has been described as resembling a war-torn area, raising concerns about the government’s allocation of resources. Meanwhile, Governor Makinde has been spotted participating in marathons abroad, including in Texas, USA.
Infrastructure Projects: A Mixed Bag
Regrettably, Makinde’s administration has initiated several infrastructure projects that are largely meant to deceive gullible Oyo State citizens. For instance, the Ibadan Airport upgrade which is meant to cost N17.1 billion to dualize the Ajia Junction-Ibadan-Ife Interchange-Nigeria Air Force Base Road, enhancing access to the airport and to promote economic growth is still at early state, six years down the road.
Earlier, the state government approved contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of inner roads within Ibadan metropolis, totaling 84.75km, at a cost of over N26 billion, yet roads within the city are in decrepit states.
Governor Makinde’s administration commitment to developing sports in Oyo State, with initiatives like hosting Nigeria’s Under-20 female national football team and investing in sports infrastructure has been described as a political gimmick to secure the votes for his second term in office.
Criticisms and Concerns
Concerns over the state’s borrowing habits, with stakeholders questioning the effectiveness of these loans in driving development has casts doubt on the transparency of his administration.
Critics cite the deterioration of educational institutions and security architecture as evidence of the administration’s shortcomings as outright failure.
“Many roads and public facilities in Ibadan remain in disrepair, causing hardship for residents while the governor travel abroad on a monthly bases to enjoy public infrastructure built by responsible leaders”, Taiwo Alimi told _Standard Daily Press_ correspondent in Ibadan, Oyo State’s capital.
A Balancing Act?
While Makinde’s administration has made minimal dent to improve infrastructure and promote economic growth, the contrast between the state’s condition and the governor’s foreign adventures raises questions about priorities and resource allocation. As Oyo State continues to grapple with development challenges, the effectiveness of Makinde’s leadership will be under scrutiny.
