The Federal Government has announced that this year’s 65th Independence Day anniversary will be celebrated on a modest scale. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, revealed this at a pre-independence press briefing in Abuja on Monday.
According to him, the celebration theme is “All Hands on Deck”, and activities have been deliberately kept simple. Events kicked off with Jummat Prayers on Friday, followed by a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday. Other highlights will include the unveiling of the National Value Charter and a National Students’ Debate.
The National Value Charter, initiated by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), is designed to instill patriotism and responsible citizenship. It sets out the government’s obligations under the “Nigerian Promise”—covering equality, democracy, peace, and inclusivity—while urging citizens to embrace values like discipline, accountability, and tolerance.
Through awareness campaigns, partnerships with communities, and digital outreach, the NOA aims to use the charter to build a stronger sense of unity and values among Nigerians. The initiative emphasizes resilience, leadership, and environmental responsibility as key parts of the Citizen’s Code.
