A Nation in Search Of Itself

By Erasmus Ikhide

A nation sixty-five, yet still in search,
Of its identity, its purpose, its perch.
A paradox of greatness, a land of contrasts,
Where strength and weakness, in endless dance, entwists.

A toddler at sixty-five, unable to stand,
A nation in shambles, with a future unplanned.
The oil flows, but prosperity’s a dream,
As corruption and mismanagement, our reality seam.

We’ve had our moments, of hope and cheer,
Demilitarization, a feat to hold dear.
But the post-military era, has been a test,
With economic woes, and national unrest.

The youth, our future, with voices so bright,
Demand change, and an end to the night.
Of darkness and despair, of inequality and strife,
We need a new dawn, a new life.

The coming decade, critical, we’ll see,
Will we find our way, to unity and destiny?
Or will we continue, in this downward spin,
A nation at risk, with our future within?

Let’s come together, and forge a new way,
For Nigeria’s greatness, we must not delay.
We are a nation, of infinite potential and might,
Let’s harness our strength, and shine with all our light.

The answers lie within, the solutions too,
We need no specialists, to tell us what to do.
The nation knows, its plight and its fate,
It’s time for action, not just words and debate.

So let’s work together, hand in hand,
To build a nation, where all can stand.
A nation united, strong and free,
Where greatness is our destiny.
