Former Kwara Lawmaker Saheed Popoola Dumps APC for PDP, Declares 2027 Power Shift

In what appears to be a major political shakeup in Kwara State, Hon. Saheed Popoola, a two-term lawmaker and former member of the Kwara State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The move, which took place in Offa Local Government Area, saw several of his loyal supporters also switch camps.

Popoola, who once represented Ojomu/Balogun Constituency, said his decision came after deep reflection on the current state of the ruling party. He lamented that the APC had strayed from its founding ideals of justice and prosperity, claiming that loyalty in the party had become centered around individuals rather than service to the people. “I joined the PDP not out of desperation but conviction,” he said. “The PDP remains the only peaceful and viable opposition in Nigeria. Come 2027, the PDP will reclaim Kwara State.” His declaration was met with loud cheers from the crowd of supporters who described the move as a political homecoming.

Meanwhile, the APC leadership in Kwara State has downplayed Popoola’s defection, describing it as inconsequential. Party officials claimed that his presence had not been felt for a long time, suggesting he had distanced himself from the party before the last general elections.

Popoola also criticized the current administration over the rising cases of insecurity and banditry in parts of the state, blaming it on what he called “misgovernance and lack of foresight.” His defection signals growing political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition forces begin to rally for a comeback in Kwara’s political landscape.
