Coup Plot Deepens: Over 40 Military Officers Arrested as Investigators Trace Funds to Ex-Governor”

Fresh revelations have intensified the ongoing investigation into an alleged coup plot against the Federal Government, as military authorities reportedly arrested 15 additional officers, bringing the total number of detained personnel to over 40.

According to insider sources, the latest arrests followed confessions extracted from the first batch of 16 officers, who allegedly detailed the roles their colleagues were meant to play in what investigators have described as a “grand plot” to destabilize the country. Security operatives are said to be analysing communication records among the suspects, with more arrests expected as the probe widens.

The first set of detained officers reportedly includes a Brigadier General, a Colonel, four Lieutenant Colonels, five Majors, two Captains, a Lieutenant Commander (Navy), a Squadron Leader (Air Force), and one Army Lieutenant. Most of them belong to the Infantry Corps, Signals Corps, and Ordnance Corps.

Among those named are Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq (Nasarawa), Colonel M.A. Ma’aji (Niger), Lt Col S. Bappah (Bauchi), Lt Col A.A. Hayatu (Kaduna), and others across different states and service courses. The extensive spread of officers across various military formations, analysts note, suggests a well-coordinated network.

In a more troubling twist, investigators reportedly traced financial transactions linked to the alleged conspiracy to a former governor who also served as a minister of state. Collaboration among the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and other security agencies reportedly uncovered large sums funneled through intermediaries to fund the operation.

Sources said the detained officers have been cooperating with interrogators, providing key insights into the recruitment chain and planned logistics. While the Defence Headquarters has yet to issue an official statement, military insiders insist the situation remains “under control” pending the conclusion of investigations.

The development has heightened public tension and drawn fresh attention to internal security concerns, as Nigerians await clarity from the armed forces and government on the alleged coup plot.
