The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert, forecasting a mix of dust haze and thunderstorms across several regions of the country from Monday through Wednesday. The agency cautioned citizens to remain vigilant and take safety measures, especially motorists and those with respiratory issues.
In its weather outlook released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted that parts of the northern region — including Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, and portions of Kaduna — would experience slight dust haze on Monday, while other northern areas will remain sunny. It also forecast isolated thunderstorms over southern Taraba by afternoon and evening hours.
The central region, according to NiMet, will see sunny skies with patches of clouds, followed by isolated thunderstorms in parts of Benue and Kogi later in the day. Meanwhile, the southern region is expected to witness cloudy conditions with chances of light morning rainfall and moderate showers by evening in areas such as Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos.
For Tuesday, NiMet projected continued hazy conditions in the North, with the possibility of thunderstorms developing later over southern Taraba. It also highlighted that cloudy mornings and moderate rainfall are expected across several southern states, including Ogun, Edo, Enugu, Abia, and Delta.
By Wednesday, sunny conditions are anticipated across northern and central regions, with thunderstorms likely in parts of Kwara, Benue, and Kogi. Coastal and inland states like Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom may experience moderate thunderstorms later in the day.
NiMet advised motorists to drive carefully under hazy and wet conditions as dust particles may reduce visibility and air quality in the North. It also warned individuals with asthma or respiratory challenges to minimize exposure to dust and stay indoors during periods of heavy haze.
Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for better planning, while the public was encouraged to stay informed via NiMet’s website and social media channels for daily weather reports and safety advisories.
