The Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja has deployed tactical teams, helicopters, and drones to Anambra State as part of intensified security measures ahead of the November 8 governorship election.
In a statement issued Sunday in Awka, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the deployment was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The move, he said, aligns with the Force’s strategic operational plan to boost security architecture across Anambra with advanced manpower and technical support.
According to Ikenga, the tactical units will collaborate with local police formations to ensure peace and order during the polls. The reinforcements will also strengthen aerial and ground surveillance operations throughout the state’s 21 Local Government Areas.
While receiving the teams, Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, expressed gratitude to the IGP for his continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He noted that the aerial surveillance would complement ongoing land patrols by tactical squads, intelligence officers, and special units positioned in strategic locations.
Orutugu emphasized that the use of helicopters and drones would enable real-time monitoring of flashpoints, border communities, and other sensitive areas during the election period. He added that ground patrols and checkpoints would remain active to ensure swift responses to any potential threats.
The CP reiterated the command’s readiness to collaborate with other security agencies and stakeholders to maintain peace before, during, and after the election. He urged residents to stay calm, vigilant, and cooperative by reporting suspicious activities via the command’s emergency hotlines: 07039194332 or 08039334002.
Orutugu assured the public that the police remain fully committed to ensuring a secure environment where citizens can exercise their civic rights without fear, intimidation, or disruption.
