Governor Douye Diri Dumps PDP, Joins APC with Thousands of Supporters in Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), putting an end to weeks of political speculation.

The defection ceremony, held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, drew thousands of supporters from all eight local government areas. Many were seen in white T-shirts, singing, dancing, and drumming along major streets in celebration of the governor’s move.

Diri’s switch marks a significant political development in the South-South region, as he joins a growing list of influential leaders aligning with the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno, Delta State Governor Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, former Delta Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Ondo State Governor Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh.

Governor Diri’s defection is expected to reshape the political dynamics in Bayelsa, as analysts predict it could strengthen the APC’s presence in the state and redefine future electoral strategies.
