IGP Egbetokun Under Fire for Allegedly Gifting 60 Police Academy Admission Slots to Senate President Akpabio and Top Lawmakers

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly awarded 60 admission slots in the 2025 Nigerian Police Academy intake to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, his deputy Jibrin Barau, and several other influential lawmakers, according to documents obtained by SaharaReporters.

The list reportedly shows that Akpabio personally nominated seven candidates, six from his home state, Akwa Ibom, and one from Nasarawa, while his deputy, Barau Jibrin, was allotted five candidates from Kano State. Other lawmakers, including Sen. Henry Seriake Dickson, Sen. Abba Moro, and Sen. AbdulFatai Buhari, also received multiple nomination slots.

A top source within the Police Academy accused the IGP of “bastardising the admission process”, alleging that the move was designed to secure political loyalty and extend his influence within the force.

This revelation follows earlier reports of preferential promotions and nepotism under Egbetokun’s leadership — including allegations of favoritism and ethnic bias in senior officer promotions. The controversy has fueled growing discontent among police officers, who claim the institution’s integrity is being eroded by corruption and political interference.
