Oyo Govt, NUT Dismiss Claims That Teacher Was Beaten to Death by Students, Clarifies Cause of Death

The Oyo State Ministry of Education and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have refuted viral reports claiming that a teacher in Ogbomoso, Mr. Abiodun Adegoke, was beaten to death by students. Both bodies described the story as false and misleading, urging the public to disregard it.

According to Commissioner for Education, Olusegun Olayiwola, and NUT Chairman, Raji Oladimeji, investigations revealed that the teacher had caught four students gambling on May 28, 2025, but was never assaulted. They explained that Mr. Adegoke only dislocated his arm while trying to discipline one of the students and later sought treatment.

Sadly, it was later discovered that the teacher was battling Stage 4 bone marrow cancer, which led to his death on November 4, 2025. The Principal of Soun High School, Mr. Ajayi Adeyinka, confirmed that the deceased was a dedicated teacher and not a victim of student violence.

Both the ministry and NUT condemned the spread of fake news, warning that such reports could damage public trust and discourage teachers. The NUT further revealed that the union had raised ₦2 million to support Adegoke’s treatment before his passing, emphasizing that the case was one of illness, not assault.
