Rigging Is the Worst Coup Against Democracy — Dickson and Amaechi Warn Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Governors of Bayelsa and Rivers States, Seriake Dickson and Rotimi Amaechi, have raised alarm over what they described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy, citing electoral fraud, voter apathy, and political manipulation as major dangers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the fifth anniversary lecture of First Daily Newspaper in Abuja, themed “2027: How Can We Make Our Votes Count?”, both leaders condemned the lack of transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process. Dickson, who chaired the event, declared that rigging elections is the worst form of coup, as it undermines the sovereignty of the people.
He recalled his days as a governor in the opposition, describing election rigging as “a conspiracy to commit crimes” and called for stronger electoral laws to protect citizens’ votes. Similarly, Amaechi lamented that no incumbent government has ever implemented true electoral reform, saying entrenched political interests always frustrate such efforts.
In his keynote address, Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, criticised the “unhealthy link” between election management and political power, warning that Nigeria’s democracy would remain fragile as long as electoral bodies are politically influenced.
Daniel Markson, Publisher of First Daily, added that Nigeria’s leadership crisis stems from flawed elections and governance failure, urging leaders to embrace honesty and accountability before 2027.
