Nigerian-American Officer Kelechi Ndukwe Makes History as U.S. Navy Commodore

Nigerian-American naval officer Kelechi Ndukwe has achieved a historic milestone following his promotion to Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 60 and Commander of Task Force 65, stationed in Rota, Spain—an accomplishment earning widespread celebration across Nigeria and the global diaspora.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria publicly honored Commodore Ndukwe in a statement on X (Twitter), highlighting his exceptional rise within the U.S. Navy and his longstanding record of breaking barriers. The mission described his journey as “pure inspiration” and a powerful illustration of American excellence shaped by immigrant talent.

Ndukwe first made global headlines in 2021 when he became the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97). His latest promotion represents another major step in a distinguished career that spans decades of service across multiple naval vessels, including roles aboard the USS Devastator, as well as senior leadership positions within the Navy’s personnel command.
