Gunmen Abduct Newly Elected Vice Chairman, Councillors in Borno Ambush

The newly elected vice chairman of Biu Local Government Area in Borno State, Alhaji Saidu, has been abducted alongside two councillors following an attack by suspected terrorists along the Kamuya–Buni Yadi road.

The councillors represent Zarawuyaku and Miringa wards, and one of them is a former vice chairman of the local government. The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday evening as the officials were travelling from Biu to Maiduguri after last Saturday’s local government elections.

Also taken during the attack were some unidentified passengers who were travelling in a Hisbah vehicle from Potiskum in Yobe State to Biu. Sources said the attackers stopped vehicles along the road before abducting the victims and taking them to an unknown location.

A senior political figure in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction and appealed to the government and security agencies to act swiftly. He urged authorities to intensify rescue efforts to ensure the safe return of the politicians and other passengers.

The road linking Biu, Buratai, Kamuya and Buni Yadi has long been described as dangerous, with repeated cases of attacks, killings and abductions reported over the years. Despite its importance as a major link between Borno and Yobe states, commuters continue to travel the route amid growing security concerns.

The latest abduction has renewed fears among residents and political leaders, especially as it comes shortly after local government elections. Many are calling for increased security presence and urgent action to make the road safer for travellers.
