Tinubu Threatens Governors Over Delayed Local Government Autonomy

President Bola Tinubu has warned that he may take decisive executive actions, including reducing states’ allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), if governors continue to delay implementing local government financial autonomy as mandated by the Supreme Court. The warning came during the 15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Tinubu stressed that the autonomy of local governments is central to grassroots development and democratic governance, noting that resistance to the Supreme Court ruling undermines constitutional order. “The Supreme Court has said, ‘give them their money directly.’ If you wait for my Executive Order… FAAC after FAAC, you will see your allocation dwindling,” he said.

The President also called for unity and tolerance within the APC, reiterated support for the establishment of state police to tackle insecurity, and urged the National Assembly to ensure safeguards against abuses. He further backed efforts to increase women’s participation in elective offices and opposed centralising the lottery business under the federal government.

Vice President Kashim Shettima praised Tinubu’s political courage, while APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda announced plans for nationwide e-registration of party members. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Progressive Governors Forum Chairman Hope Uzodimma commended the President for his bold economic reforms.
