The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 51-year-old security operative, Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu, over the death of his 19-year-old maternal cousin, Loveth Uloma Nwangwu. Police said he was apprehended at a pharmacy in Nsukka, where the incident occurred.
According to the command, the suspect—who serves with the Neighbourhood Security Watch Group—was taken into custody on December 1, 2025. Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, condemned the incident and assured the public that justice would be pursued without delay.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, explained that the victim had earlier reported allegations of abuse, threats, and unlawful confinement at the Umabor Police Division on November 28. The suspect was arrested at that time, admitted wrongdoing, and pleaded for forgiveness.
The police statement noted that Loveth had lived with the suspect since 2019 after the death of his wife. She later fled his residence and reported the case, after which the police issued her a medical referral form and invited all parties to the station. Her family, citing personal relationships and the sensitive nature of the allegations, initially chose not to proceed with prosecution.
Tragically, the situation escalated days later while the victim was receiving treatment at a pharmacy. The suspect confronted her there, and during the altercation, she sustained severe injuries. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was later confirmed dead. Her body has since been deposited in a mortuary pending autopsy.
The suspect was immediately rearrested and is currently in custody. CP Giwa has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to handle the case with urgency and ensure it proceeds to court within the shortest possible time.
