Plateau Government Rescues Dozens of Minors from Exploitation, Drug Abuse, and Trafficking

The Plateau State Government has intervened to rescue dozens of minors reportedly trapped in cycles of sexual exploitation, drug abuse, and trafficking in the Jos–Bukuru area. The operation, carried out by a multi-agency Task Force Committee on Human Trafficking, involved coordinated raids on brothels, hotels, and motels across the metropolis. Agencies involved include the Plateau State Ministry of Justice, NAPTIP, Nigeria Immigration Service, NACTAL, NDLEA, NSCDC, and the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the Plateau State Government, the raids led to the rescue of girls aged 11 to 17 years, including individuals living with disabilities, a breastfeeding mother, and a pregnant minor. Preliminary findings revealed that many of these young girls, who should have been in school, were allegedly drugged and exploited by men in unsafe environments at night.

Addressing the task force, the Attorney-General and Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Barr. Philemon Audu Daffi, described the situation as a “painful indictment of societal failure,” attributing the vulnerability of the minors to insecurity, economic hardship, broken homes, and irresponsible parenting. He urged officials to operate with fairness and conscience, warning that the law would take its course regardless of social status or connections.

Representatives of NACTAL and the Task Force emphasized that the intervention is aimed at safeguarding the lives, wellbeing, and futures of underaged children, calling on parents and guardians to take responsibility. Hotel and lodge operators were also sternly warned that establishments found harboring minors would be shut down.

The operation targeted several locations across Jos North and Jos South, including Jos Hotel, Plapoly Hotel, Stefans Hotel, Plateau Central Hotel, and others. Rescued victims are currently undergoing screening and evaluation, with the government set to provide rehabilitation and support. Authorities stressed that the raids mark the beginning of a sustained effort to dismantle networks exploiting vulnerable children and urged collective societal responsibility.
