Tomi Wojuola, a Nigerian man, has shared a troubling experience that left him regretting an act of kindness he believed was the right thing to do. According to him, what began as an attempt to save a life nearly ruined his own.
Wojuola explained that he noticed a young man who had collapsed by the roadside. While others walked past, he contacted a doctor for advice and was encouraged to rush the man to the hospital. Acting on that guidance, he took the stranger to a nearby medical facility.
Sadly, the man passed away shortly after they arrived. Wanting to follow due process, Wojuola requested that the police be informed since he did not know the deceased personally. What followed, he said, was a shocking turn of events.
He was taken to the GRA Police Station in Asaba, where he claimed some officers accused him of murder. Wojuola alleged that the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Joseph Udoh, threatened him and questioned why he tried to help, warning that such actions would teach him never to stop again to assist someone in distress.
Despite the deceased’s family reportedly confirming that their son had an underlying medical condition, Wojuola said the accusations persisted. He added that only the intervention of a highly placed government official saved him from being formally charged.
Even after his release, he claimed that money was taken from his account as bail, leaving him with just ₦2,000. Reflecting on the experience, Wojuola said he now understands why many Nigerians choose to record emergencies instead of helping.
As the year drew to a close, he expressed gratitude to God for escaping what he described as a life-altering ordeal, noting that many others remain behind bars for far less.
