‘Thank you’ for not hanging protesters – Trump tells Iran

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly thanked Iran’s leadership after claiming the country halted plans to execute hundreds of protesters arrested during a violent crackdown.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, Trump said Iran had cancelled the scheduled executions of over 800 detainees, describing the move as a significant decision by Tehran’s authorities.

Trump, who had repeatedly threatened military action against Iran in recent weeks, said the development influenced his decision to pause any direct intervention. Human rights groups had accused Iranian security forces of killing thousands during protests across the country.

Speaking to reporters as he departed the White House for Florida, Trump dismissed claims that Gulf states like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Oman persuaded him to avoid an attack. According to him, Iran’s actions alone changed his mind.

“They didn’t hang anyone. They cancelled the hangings. That had a big impact,” Trump said, insisting the decision was entirely his.

The situation remains tense, with global attention still fixed on Iran’s handling of dissent and the wider regional implications.
