Students of Delta State University (DELSU) in Abraka are being encouraged to take advantage of the federal government’s student loan programme, as the institution also rolls out major plans to tackle accommodation and infrastructure challenges.

Speaking ahead of the university’s 18th convocation, Vice-Chancellor Samuel Asagba expressed concern over the low participation rate in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

According to him, many students are still hesitant to apply for the loan despite struggling to pay tuition fees.

“We encourage our students to embrace this opportunity, but many are reluctant. The government only expects repayment after employment, so it’s a valuable support system,” he explained.

He added that the university has already taken steps to support applicants by allowing them to register courses and sit for exams even while accessing the loan—ensuring no student is academically disadvantaged.

The Vice-Chancellor also called on the media to help raise awareness among students and the wider public, stressing that the programme is legitimate and beneficial.

Tackling Hostel Shortage and Infrastructure Gaps

To address accommodation challenges, DELSU is pursuing several partnerships and funding initiatives.

The university is currently working with the Central Bank of Nigeria on a ₦1.2 billion project aimed at constructing hostels that can house up to 1,000 students.

In addition, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is expected to return to campus to complete previously abandoned hostel projects, which will provide another 1,000-bed capacity.

Investment in Academics and Research

DELSU is also prioritizing academic growth through funding from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

The institution has secured:

  • ₦4 billion for engineering workshops and laboratories
  • ₦2.4 billion for medical sciences development

These investments are expected to strengthen research, teaching quality, and practical training for students.

Focus on Sports and Student Welfare

Despite recent achievements—such as ranking among the top state universities in Nigeria and finishing fourth at the Nigerian University Games—the Vice-Chancellor highlighted sports facilities as an area needing urgent attention.

To support broader student needs, the university plans to launch a welfare fund, seeking contributions from alumni, philanthropists, and partners.

Looking Ahead

Professor Asagba reaffirmed DELSU’s commitment to improving ICT infrastructure, strengthening international collaborations, and enhancing staff welfare.

Overall, the university is pushing a dual agenda: encouraging students to access available financial support while aggressively investing in facilities that improve campus life and academic excellence.
