Displaced residents of Isa Local Government Area in Sokoto State have raised alarm over worsening bandit attacks, saying many of their family members are now taking dangerous routes into Niger Republic in search of safety.
According to residents, the mass movement followed renewed threats and violence linked to gunmen loyal to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. A viral video showing people fleeing their homes has since been confirmed by local authorities.
The Secretary of the Sokoto Eastern Zone Development Association, Professor Muazu Shamaki, said the exodus began after Turji issued threats to communities around Tidibali, adding that over 20 settlements have already been evacuated.
Several residents said families, including women, children and the elderly, are risking hazardous cross-border journeys to reunite with relatives in Niger Republic. Some who crossed were reportedly arrested and returned to Nigeria, yet many still believe fleeing is safer than staying behind.
A 75-year-old farmer explained that banditry has plagued the area for years, with kidnappings becoming routine and ransoms often paid without victims being released. Many displaced persons are now sheltering in classrooms converted into temporary camps in Isa, while NGOs and individuals provide relief materials.
Despite rumours that Bello Turji may have been killed, community leaders and activists insist he is still alive and operating, continuing to threaten villages across the area.
Residents are now calling on the federal government, Sokoto State Government, and local authorities to adopt a coordinated and decisive response to end the violence and restore peace to their communities.
