A Legacy of Service: DIG Gumel’s 30 Years of Unwavering Dedication to Policing

In a grand celebration marking three decades of selfless service, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, has reflected on a career defined by integrity, faith, and an unwavering commitment to community impact.

The occasion, graced by dignitaries, family members, and esteemed colleagues, served as a testament to Gumel’s indelible mark on the Nigeria Police Force and a clarifying call to younger generations on the virtues of discipline and altruistic service.

In his heartfelt address, Gumel expressed profound gratitude to Allah, the Nigeria Police Force, and the countless individuals who have supported his journey since his enlistment thirty years ago. “I could not foresee the future when I joined the force,” he recalled, “but I was guided by an unshakeable conviction to serve with honor and unwavering dedication.”

Gumel credited his academic pursuits, including his time at Ahmadu Bello University and Federal University of Technology Minna, as pivotal in shaping his leadership philosophy. His professional ascent, from cadet training at the Nigeria Police Academy to strategic roles across various states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and Kano, has been marked by a steadfast commitment to intelligence-led and community-oriented policing.

As Commissioner of Police in Sokoto State, Gumel dismantled armed robbery networks and fostered public trust through partnerships with traditional leaders. In Kano, he spearheaded the rehabilitation of over 700 youths, transforming them into productive citizens. “Saving a life is greater than arresting one,” he emphasized, underscoring his belief in the power of redemption.

Gumel’s tenure as Commissioner of Police in Kano was also marked by his role in ensuring peaceful elections in 2023, where proactive planning and stakeholder engagement were key to managing tensions. He applied similar discipline in navigating the sensitive developments surrounding the Kano Emirate in 2024, stressing that sustainable peace requires preparation, patience, and prayer.

On the international stage, Gumel has contributed to global peacekeeping, including service with the United Nations Mission in Liberia in 2011. He has also worked with the Economic Community of West African States, supporting democratic stability in countries such as Guinea-Bissau and The Gambia.

Gumel’s international recognition, including commendation from the Metropolitan Police Service, is a testament to the growing credibility of the Nigeria Police Force. He reaffirmed his commitment to community policing, citing his leadership roles in training, intelligence, and community engagement.

The DIG’s family has been his backbone throughout his journey, supporting him through frequent postings and security challenges. He dedicated the anniversary to his wife, children, and extended family, acknowledging their sacrifices.

In his closing remarks, Gumel shared lessons from his 30-year journey, urging young Nigerians to uphold integrity, pursue education, and serve beyond personal ambition. The event featured goodwill messages from prominent personalities and royal blessings, with Gumel concluding with prayers for national unity and peace.

This milestone celebrates not just years of service, but a life of resilience, purpose, and lasting impact. As Gumel embarks on a new chapter, his legacy will continue to inspire generations, reminding us that true leadership is measured by the lives we touch and the communities we serve.
