Kano Politics Shaken as Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Resigns Amid Impeachment Pressure

Kano State’s political atmosphere has taken another dramatic turn after Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam stepped down from office, following rising pressure and impeachment moves from the Kano State House of Assembly.

His resignation was made public on Friday through a statement released by Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement. According to the group, the decision was taken to protect political stability and allow governance in the state to continue without further tension.

From the tone of the statement, it is clear this was not a casual exit. The movement described the resignation as a painful but necessary step, especially as the office of the deputy governor had become heavily entangled in political controversy.

The development comes only days after the state assembly began impeachment proceedings against Abdussalam over allegations that had already stirred serious political tension in Kano. He had tried to stop the process through the court, but a Federal High Court in Kano reportedly refused his request, effectively clearing the path for the lawmakers to continue.

Still, the Kwankwasiyya Movement was quick to insist that his resignation should not be seen as an admission of guilt. According to the statement, Abdussalam maintains his innocence and believes his time in office speaks for his integrity and service to the people.

Rather than drag the state into a prolonged political battle, the movement said he chose to step aside in what it described as an act of statesmanship. In simple terms, the message was this: he would rather leave than allow the crisis to worsen and distract the government.

Interestingly, the resignation may not mean he is stepping away from politics entirely. In fact, the statement revealed that Abdussalam is now expected to focus more on strengthening the Kwankwasiyya Movement, especially as political calculations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.

That detail is important because it suggests this resignation may be less of an ending and more of a repositioning. Kano politics is rarely quiet, and this latest move could be one of the early signs that bigger alignments and battles are already forming ahead of 2027.

For now, the movement has urged supporters to remain calm and peaceful, while assuring the public that more details on the political situation will be made known in due course.
