German Chamber of Commerce and Industry: One in six industrial companies earns money from arms production


In Germany one in six is Industrial company integrated into the value chain of the defense industry. This emerges from a special evaluation of the current economic survey by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), the the Business Week is present. Almost one in three of the companies surveyed sees opportunities in the security and defense industry for their own business model.

17 percent of industrial companies earn money from the military value chain, but only a small proportion of them specialize in military equipment. According to the survey, 2.5 percent of all industrial companies produce explicitly military goods, and 6.9 percent produce so-called dual-use products – goods that can be used for both civil and military purposes. Another 7.6 percent see themselves as suppliers.

Regionally, the focus is primarily on southern Germany, where the proportion of armaments-related companies is 21 percent. In addition to the companies already involved, according to the evaluation, a further 12.3 percent of industrial companies were planning to become involved in the defense sector. While the general economic situation remains tense, the survey “reflects that good prospects in the defense industry reflected – as a result of the geopolitical conflicts,” said DIHK expert Rainer Kambeck Business Week.
