Wedding Joy Turns to Tragedy as 14-Year-Old Girl Dies from Stray Bullet in Maiduguri

What was meant to be a joyful wedding day in Maiduguri, Borno State, ended in heartbreak after a 14-year-old girl was reportedly killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by military personnel during celebratory gunfire.

According to reports, the teenager was inside her family’s home when the bullet struck her on Saturday, April 4. She was said to have been preparing for the same wedding when the tragic incident happened. A family friend revealed that the young girl, who lived with her family in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital quarters, had just finished applying henna for herself and her mother ahead of the ceremony.

Her death has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the dangerous culture of celebratory gunfire, especially in residential areas where innocent lives are often placed at risk.

Reacting to the incident, Amnesty International condemned the killing and called on Nigerian authorities to launch a full investigation. The organisation described the girl’s death as entirely preventable and said those responsible must be identified and held accountable.

Amnesty also stressed that the use of firearms in civilian spaces, whether intentional or reckless, continues to pose a serious threat to public safety. It warned that unless stricter enforcement and accountability measures are put in place, more avoidable tragedies may occur.

The teenager was buried on Sunday at the Maiduguri graveyard, leaving her family, friends, and community in deep mourning over a life cut short in such a senseless manner.

What should have been a day of celebration became a painful reminder of how quickly carelessness can destroy lives. For many, the tragedy is not just about one family’s loss, but about a dangerous practice that has gone unchecked for far too long.
