Fresh Bloodshed in Borno and Benue as Soldiers, Civilians Killed in Coordinated Attacks

Tragedy has once again struck Nigeria’s security landscape as troops under Operation HADIN KAI lost a senior officer and six soldiers during a deadly encounter with Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

According to military authorities, the incident occurred on April 12, 2026, in Monguno, where troops engaged terrorists in a fierce gun battle. Although the attackers were eventually repelled and forced to retreat, the situation took a tragic turn when the Commanding Officer, moving to assess his troops, ran into an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The explosion claimed his life alongside six other soldiers.

The military described the fallen officer as courageous and selfless, noting that his decision to move toward the frontline reflected exceptional leadership and commitment to duty. His death, along with those of his men, has been described as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation at large.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, fresh violence has claimed the lives of a Mobile Police officer and at least 13 civilians following attacks by suspected armed herdsmen in Otukpo and Apa Local Government Areas.

Local sources revealed that the police officer was killed while attempting to defend residents of Upu community from an attack. The violence reportedly began earlier with coordinated assaults on Ikobi and Adija communities, leaving several people dead and others injured.

The attacks escalated further when gunmen returned to strike Edikwu-Ankpali, where at least 10 people, including women, were killed. Many residents remain missing, with local youths still searching nearby bushes amid fears that more bodies may be discovered.

Community members have expressed anger and frustration, accusing the government of failing to protect lives and properties. Local authorities, however, say security presence has been reinforced, while urging residents to remain calm.

These incidents highlight the persistent insecurity across different regions of Nigeria, raising renewed concerns over the effectiveness of current security strategies and the safety of vulnerable communities.
