Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, has revealed that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed his ambition to run for governor in the 2027 Lagos State election.

Hamzat made this known on Wednesday after a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja involving the President and the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC).

According to him, the delegation—led by Tajudeen Olusi—presented him to the President, who gave his blessing to the council’s decision to support his candidacy.

Speaking to reporters, Hamzat expressed excitement and gratitude, describing the GAC members as experienced leaders whose guidance he values. He said their endorsement, alongside the President’s approval, strengthened his confidence ahead of the race.

He acknowledged that the governorship role is a major responsibility but emphasized that his years of service as deputy governor under Babajide Sanwo-Olu have prepared him well.

“The mission is bold… but I have gained experience. I understand the system—I know the kitchen,” he said, using a metaphor to describe his familiarity with governance in Lagos State.

The development follows a wave of endorsements within a short period. The GAC had earlier unanimously adopted Hamzat as its preferred candidate, while Governor Sanwo-Olu publicly backed him as a successor. The council also reportedly agreed to purchase his ₦50 million nomination form.

Despite the strong backing, Olusi clarified that the party would still conduct primary elections in line with APC rules, maintaining a commitment to internal democracy.

Hamzat, 59, previously served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure under former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode before becoming deputy governor in 2019.

The emerging consensus around his candidacy signals growing momentum, though the final decision will ultimately rest on the party’s primary process and the broader electorate in 2027.
