Fuel discount: Fuel prices are rising again, with a daily average still over two euros

The prices for diesel and gasoline rose significantly on average over the weekend. This is what the ADAC figures show. A liter of Super E10 cost a nationwide daily average of 2,017 euros on Sunday. For one liter of diesel you had to pay 2,104 euros. Compared to the previous day, this is an increase of 1.4 and 1.1 cents respectively.

The comparison with the daily averages from Sunday with the last day before
Fuel discount shows: E10 is currently only 10.9 cents cheaper, diesel 11.1 cents. That is significantly less than the tax reduction of 16.7 cents per literwhich came into force on May 1st. The ADAC criticized the fact that the oil companies did not pass on the entire tax cut to their customers.

According to the automobile club, an increase in crude oil prices cannot explain the development. In fact, the price of crude oil is currently lower than at the end of April. The ADAC is therefore demanding that prices fall so far that they are more than 16.7 cents below the prices before the introduction of the fuel discount.

Gas stations implement tax cuts in different ways

There are currently noticeable price differences between the individual gas stations. Individual operators offered both diesel and E10 for less than 2 euros on Monday morning. Since the introduction of the 12 o’clock rule, prices tend to rise sharply with the only permitted increase at midday – often by significantly more than 10 cents. They then fall relatively sharply again until the next morning.

The price curves just varied more than usualsaid the President of the Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt. “Some gas stations have increased prices very significantly, others not or almost not at all.” On Saturday morning, the level in southern Germany was on average 5 to 7 cents lower than in central and northern Germany, the office explained. The reason is regional differences in refinery and wholesale prices.

Billions of dollars in tax losses

The tax discount to provide relief in view of the sharp rise in fuel prices as a result of the Iran war is intended to apply for two months. Specifically, it falls until the end of June Energy tax of 14.04 cents per liter, on which there is no longer any VAT. The almost 17 cents that the state incurs for every liter could add up to tax losses of up to 1.6 billion euros.

The prices will be but controlled by the oil companies. The fuel discount does not oblige you to make any specific reductions. However, the governing parties have emphasized several times that the full amount must go to drivers. “This is not a request, this is a clear expectation,” said Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) before the start of the fuel discount. SPD parliamentary group deputy Armand Zorn demanded: “The rip-off must end, and quickly.”
