Chelsea Football Club have appointed former Spain international and coach Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year contract, in a major move aimed at reviving the club’s recent decline.
The announcement was made on Sunday, with Alonso set to officially begin his role on July 1, 2026.
Chelsea described the appointment as part of a long-term rebuild as the club continues to struggle for consistency. The Blues currently sit ninth in the Premier League table and recently suffered defeat in the FA Cup final to Manchester City.
In a statement, the club confirmed that Alonso will take charge of the men’s team at Stamford Bridge, with expectations high that he will restore Chelsea’s competitiveness in domestic and European competitions.
Alonso arrives with a growing reputation in European football management after leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten domestic league and cup double during the 2023/24 season, a historic achievement that elevated his status among top coaches.
However, his coaching journey has also seen setbacks, including a brief spell at Real Madrid, where he lasted only seven months after being appointed last year before departing in January.
Chelsea’s recent struggles have intensified pressure on the club’s hierarchy, with the team now enduring eight seasons without a major domestic trophy despite significant spending in the transfer market.
The club hopes Alonso’s tactical approach and recent success in Germany will mark a turning point as they prepare for a rebuilding phase ahead of the new season.
