2027: Peter Obi Emerges Sole Presidential Candidate of NDC After Screening Exercise

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as its sole presidential flagbearer for the 2027 general election.

The party made the announcement after Obi successfully completed his screening before a 17-member committee on May 19, chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor, Sam Egwu. According to the NDC, Obi was the only aspirant who purchased the presidential nomination form before the close of sales, effectively making him unopposed in the race.

The screening committee, which was inaugurated on the same day, is also responsible for vetting aspirants for governorship, senatorial, and House of Representatives positions across the country.

Obi reportedly arrived at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja at about 6:45 p.m., accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh, before submitting his Expression of Interest and nomination documents through an aide.

Party officials explained that while nomination sales for the presidential ticket had closed on May 19, sales for other elective positions would continue until May 26.

NDC National Secretary, Barr. Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, said the committee was set up to ensure a transparent screening process, adding that former governor Sam Egwu would serve as chairman, while Barr. Reuben Egwuaba would act as secretary.

The development positions Obi as the party’s early standard-bearer ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle, as political realignments continue to take shape across Nigeria’s opposition and ruling blocs.
